Single Parent

Find out how parental leave and benefits apply across different circumstances.


If you are a single unwed mother

You may be eligible for all Government-Paid leave and benefit schemes, subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria. 

 

For Shared Parental Leave and Shared Parental Leave Benefit

You can take the full duration of Shared Parental Leave or receive the cash equivalent in the form of Shared Parental Leave Benefit to support your caregiving needs. If you marry your child’s father within the first year of your child’s date of birth, you can then choose to share this leave with him. 

 

For Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave

You cease to be eligible for Government-Paid Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave if your child is adopted by another person, unless it is a joint adoption with your spouse.


If you are a single unwed father  

For Paternity Leave, Paternity Benefit, Shared Parental Leave and Shared Parental Leave Benefit

You may be eligible if you marry the child's mother between conception and within 12 months from your child's date of birth (inclusive of date of birth), subject to prevailing eligibility criteria.

Government-Paid Paternity Leave and Shared Parental Leave (or Government-Paid Paternity Benefit and Shared Parental Leave Benefit) can be taken only on or after the date of marriage and within 12 months from your child's birth.

For Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave

You may be eligible if you marry the child's mother, subject to prevailing eligibility criteria.  

You may only consume Government-Paid Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave on or after the date of marriage.


If you are a widowed parent

You are eligible for all Government-Paid leave and benefit schemes, subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria. 

 

For Shared Parental Leave and Shared Parental Leave Benefit

You can use any remaining Shared Parental Leave or receive the cash equivalent in the form of Shared Parental Leave Benefit that your deceased spouse has not yet used. This must be taken in full weeks. 

If you wish to change the leave-sharing arrangement after the first four weeks of your child's date of birth, you do not need your employer’s approval. We understand that losing a spouse is beyond your control, and you need extra support caring for your newborn. If you are a divorced parent

You are eligible for all Government-Paid leave and benefit schemes, subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria.
