Parents are Working Part-Time or on Short-Term Contract
Find out how parental leave and benefits apply if you are working part-time or on short-term contract.
If you are working part-time or on short-term contract
For Maternity Leave, Maternity Benefit, Paternity Leave, Paternity Benefit, Adoption Leave, Adoption Benefit and Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave
If you have worked at least 3 continuous months with your employer before your child’s date of birth or adoptive child’s Formal Intent to Adopt (FIA) date, you may be eligible for Government-Paid Maternity Leave, Paternity Leave, Adoption Leave or Childcare and Extended Childcare Leave. This is subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria.
If you have not worked for 3 continuous months, but have worked for at least a total of 90 days (continuously or non-continuously) in the 12 months prior to your child’s date of birth or adoptive child’s FIA date, you may qualify for Government-Paid Maternity Benefit, Paternity Benefit or Adoption Benefit. This is subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria.
For Shared Parental Leave and Shared Parental Leave Benefit
Similarly, you may be eligible for Shared Parental Leave (SPL) or Shared Parental Leave Benefit (SPB) subject to the prevailing eligibility criteria.
The number of weeks you can take depends on how you and your spouse choose to share the leave. Your SPL or SPB entitlement will be calculated based on the number of days you work each week. If you work 3 days a week and allocate 3 weeks of SPL to yourself, you will be entitled to 9 days of SPL or can be reimbursed for 9 days of your income under SPB.
